Insights Flourish: Connected and Autonomous Vehicle

The increasing number of vehicles on our roads is not only leading to frustrating journeys, as users are more and more frequently experiencing high levels of congestion, but it is also placing enormous pressure on our environment, with transport emissions making up a substantial proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is clear therefore that drastic action must be taken to develop a more sustainable future through intelligent transport solutions.

Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) are expected to play a key role in the future of transport. They have the potential to address key safety issues associated with human driven vehicles, and to increase accessibility and inclusivity, addressing some of the wider socio-economic challenges faced by an ageing society.

Employment of multi-sector expertise

FLOURISH was a multi-sector collaboration, which helped advance the successful implementation of CAVs in the UK by developing services and capabilities that link user needs and system requirements, maximising the benefits of CAVs for users and transport authorities.

Based in the South West, the three-year project was worth £5.5 million and was co-funded between industry and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). It was delivered in partnership with Innovate UK and was part of the governments £100 million Intelligent Mobility Fund.

Development of market leading services

FLOURISH developed market-leading CAV services and products in three main areas:

  • User-focused trials and social research to understand of the needs of an aging society and what older people want from their interface with CAVs.
  • Secure wireless connectivity, including cyber security, data management and analysis – enabling the future real-times communication of journey information to users and transport authorities.
  • Consolidating and extending the position of the West of England as a centre of excellence for the safe trialling of CAVs, providing a road map for the safe integration of CAVs within our transport infrastructure.
