Overview:

As a Major Projects Director (MPD), you will hold a senior leadership position on a large civil engineering infrastructure project. You will typically oversee the strategic planning, execution and delivery of the project/programme. The MPD will be responsible for high-level decision-making, stakeholder management and ensuring that projects meet health & safety, schedule, compliance, quality, and budgetary guidelines. They must adeptly handle risk management, innovate with contemporary technologies and lead multidisciplinary teams towards achieving ambitious project objectives. This role requires extensive experience and proven track record of successfully delivering infrastructure engineering projects.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Health, Safety and Well-being: Be accountable for the health, safety and well-being of the project delivery team(s)
  • Project Planning and Strategy Development: Develop comprehensive project plans that outline all stages of the project lifecycle from inception through to completion. Ensure alignment with strategic objectives and stakeholder expectations.
  • Budget Management: Oversee the financial aspects of the project including budgeting, procurement and cost management to ensure the project remains within the allocated multi-million-pound budget.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication: Maintain effective communication channels with all stakeholders including government bodies, private sector partners, supply chain partners and public representatives. Ensure transparency and regular updates on project progress and challenges.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks associated with project execution and devise mitigation strategies. Regularly review and adjust risk management plans to safeguard the project against unforeseen issues.
  • Compliance and Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all project activities comply with relevant laws, regulations, and standards at local, national, and international levels. This includes environmental, safety, and employment regulations.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Lead and motivate a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that all team members are aligned with the project goals and are fully equipped to meet their responsibilities.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement rigorous quality control processes throughout the project lifecycle to meet or exceed the quality standards expected by stakeholders and within the industry.
  • Innovation and Technology Integration: Leverage the latest technologies and innovative practices to enhance project efficiency, effectiveness, and outcomes. Stay abreast of industry advancements to maintain competitive edge.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience of working across UK infrastructure market.
  • Fellow of the APM/RICS / CICES / IOB or equivalent professional body is preferred but not essential.
  • Effective Project Management and Leadership skills, with clear knowledge of best practice contract methodologies in the UK environment.
  • Good understanding of procurement, contract performance measurement, risk management and change and claim management.
  • Good negotiating, influencing and communication skills to command professional respect at all levels.
  • Experience with most common Forms of Contract (NEC & FIDIC) within the major projects and programme environment.
