AtkinsRealis is looking for Safety PSA Analyst(s) to be a part of our team in supporting the design of new nuclear power plants and the operation and refurbishment of existing CANDU nuclear power plants. The senior PSA analyst will work with other junior and senior staff to develop and apply advanced analysis methodologies to perform PSAs and other PSA related safety analyses for existing, refurbishment and new build. These include issues related to hazard identification, Level 1 PSA, Level 2 PSA, Level 3 PSA, seismic, flood and or fire safety assessments, failure mode and effect analyses, internal and external events. The candidates are also expected to be able to develop training material in PSA and review PSA documents.

Your role within the team:

The candidates are expected to have strong analytical and technical skills in PSA and be ready to take on various technical tasks within a short period of time. This includes but not limited to:

  • Responsible for probabilistic safety assessments of plant systems especially in the area of internal events, shutdown, internal fire, internal flood and seismic events as well as other external hazards.
  • Responsible for conducting reliability systems assessments (process and safety), especially safety systems e.g., emergency core cooling, containment etc.) balance of plant (BOP), and plant operation and safety related systems.
  • Interfacing with clients/projects to assess operational and safety issues and advising on potential solutions.
  • Preparing and/or reviewing work proposals for internal and external clients.
  • Developing risk monitor and generation risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of PSA methodologies, codes and standards (e.g., Canadian, US, IAEA).
  • Developing, plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the analysis work for a project of large scope.
  • Proposing/developing approaches to be used on safety analysis tasks.
  • Coordinating work with all interfaces including project management, as well as a multidisciplinary analysis team.
  • Supervise the work of staff in a multi-discipline setting and be accountable for the quality of work performed.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to engineers at lower grade levels and/or other technical employees.
  • Provide positive reinforcement and act proactively to encourage positive relationships and teamwork.
  • Ensuring work is performed consistent with project requirements.

The ideal candidate 

  • A Relevant honours degree from a university of recognized standing in Engineering with minimum of 1, 5 or 10 years (Jr., Intermediate and Sr. positions, respectively).
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out responsibilities noted above.
  • Excellent knowledge of the CANDU design, including both NSP (especially safety systems) and BOP.
  • Broad knowledge of system operation, plant response and understanding of underlying reliability principles.
  • Able to work closely and effectively with the clients in a client/consultant relationship.
  • Proficient in CAFTA suite of computer codes, CFAST and RiskSpectrum an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and be flexible, i.e., must be able to perform varied work assignments effectively and respond quickly to changing project needs.
  • Knowledge of severe accident analysis and severe accident management guidelines.
  • Proven leadership skills, as technical guidance to assist and supervise analysts
  • Experience in licensing activities would also be an asset.
  • Understanding of light water reactor design and PSAs is an asset.
  • Ability to show initiative while working in a team environment.
  • Ability to work to budget and schedule.
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally to participate in walkdowns, meetings and workshops.
  • Eligible for nuclear energy worker (NEW).
  • Full commitment to work in a formal QA environment.
