Technical Manager; Metrology

Reporting to the Candu Field Services Technical Director, the Technical Manager – Metrology will support various projects with expert metrology staff, and will be responsible for the cohort technicians, technologists and trades assigned to metrological services at our facility in Sheridan Park or at our customer sites.  This manager will establish a standard for high quality metrology services using the modern technologies where commercially feasible.  This manager shall drive a high level of performance for the technical staffing as related to the key skills required for nuclear tooling performance and operation, such as Human Performance, Quality Assurance and Quality Control Strategies, Foreign Material Exclusion practices, and Radiation Protection Strategies.

Your role within the team:

Technical management

  • Accountable for all non-commercial aspects of the various metrology projects and to lead all team members who are performing duties to ensure that the work progresses with safety, quality, schedule, cost, and contractual requirements.
  • Manages team to deliver high performance and high quality nuclear tooling
  • Supports PMs to ensure requirements for outage readiness are met as related to all CFS metrology tooling
  • Supports PMs to ensure requirements for outage readiness are met as related to all CFS technical training
  • Ensures that the final deliverables from their team meet customer requirements specified in the contract and overall alignment with nuclear codes and standards.
  • Approves technical documents prepared by staff reporting to them.
  • Removes barriers that would impact deliverables to meet project requirements and priorities, working with the assigned staff to find solutions and optimizations.
  • Ensures that work is conducted in accordance with applicable Engineering and Quality Assurance procedures.

Resource management

  • Provide oversight for assigned work cells in both the SP3 and at the customer sites as possible, e.g. with respect to productivity, housekeeping, utilization, workflow and any infrastructure needs
  • Fosters a team environment and team building within technical group and with internal and external customers.
  • Creates a scheme to train inexperienced personnel in the requisite metrology skills including mentorship of junior personnel under senior personnel.
  • Forecast resource demands for the assigned work scope, including skills, capabilities, and durations
  • Work with other CFS & SP3 technical managers as well as managers of other resource groups outside of the CFS cohort to staff (e.g. SP3 Engineering, Shoreline, Canatom projects) to plan for  staff peaks during outages (e.g. REMAS projects)
  • Defines the structure of the group or their scope of accountability, including reporting relationships.
  • Ensures all training and qualifications records are up-to-date, and required training and qualifications are completed/updated on time.
  • Ensures that the CFS & SP3 metrologist staff compliment is sized appropriately for the forecasted projects and services.
  • Performs all recruiting and disciplinary functions for the assigned team
  • Provides clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback, recognizes and rewards achievements, and takes disciplinary steps when warranted.

The ideal Candidate:

  • Preferred candidate will have experience with leading site metrology services at CANDU nuclear sites, and possess deep knowledge in the application of various portable metrology tooling.
  • Experienced technician, technologist or tradesman with years of experience with nuclear tooling assembly and testing
  • 10+ years’ experience supporting various type of projects including construction, manufacturing, or engineering services projects.
  • 5-10 years’ experience leading individuals and teams is an asset.
  • Able to build a team and can inspire them to perform and work together towards a common goal.
  • An appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of field/portable metrology processes and equipment
  • Expert knowledge of operational practices for foreign material exclusion
  • Working knowledge of remote operation of tooling using remote instrumentation and control
  • Working knowledge of industrial safety and nuclear safety culture.
  • Experience working in a nuclear environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of the customer’s physical working environment at any of the Ontario nuclear stations, with a preference for the Bruce site.
  • Strong working knowledge of the customer’s administrative process for onboarding of personnel, including security clearance process and the customer training processes, including training selection and scheduling.
  • Strong working knowledge of the customers radiation protection (RP) practices, both from the standpoint of the day-to-day coordination required to organize daily work, and from the standpoint of the interfaces required with both the customer RP and Health Physics (HP) personnel, e.g., ALARA planning, RAD waste management planning and crew alignment.
  • Strong working knowledge of the customers work planning organization and practices, as related to overall schedule reporting and with daily work initiation and closeout.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex and parallel technical projects.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills in the development of team members and support staff;
  • Strong communication (both verbal and written), and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent client focus and conflict resolution skills;
  • Willing to travel to and potentially work at Project sites to meet corporate needs.
