The different types of Architects and what they do

Architecture is where art meets science. It is the process of planning, designing, and constructing buildings and structures.

At AtkinsRéalis, our Architects and Planners are always looking for the best way to do things, whether that's advising on structural integrity or drawing up a brand-new public space to be enjoyed for decades.

Are you considering a career in Architecture and Planning? Here's a breakdown of the different types of Architect jobs, what they entail and first-hand experiences from our Architecture professionals:

Project Architect

Key difference - Project Architects take ownership of projects from inception to completion and manage multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities - You'll be ensuring designs match client briefs and incorporate site potential and limitations. Taking into account climate, context, and cultural considerations, you'll lead diverse teams through various project work stages.

Here at AtkinsRéalis, we are at our best when we combine technology with innovation. We redefine engineering by thinking boldly, proudly and differently.

"The architectural projects I work on at AtkinsRéalis are designed to create a more favourable future for people. I'm on an exciting project with the Department for Education (DfE) related to NetZero in Schools in the UK. We're working with data and digital solutions to decarbonize and uplift the DfE's building portfolios." - Cova Maldonado Suarez, a qualified Architect at AtkinsRéalis

Senior Architect

Key difference - Senior Architects report to the project leader on design aspects as well as the managing director on operations, risk management, contractual, and more. A key part of this role is resolving design issues in a creative and pragmatic way.

Responsibilities - You'll collaborate with clients to drive discussions to resolutions based on risk assessments you have carried out and your technical expertise. This role requires excellent organisational skills as you will be overseeing junior team members and working with clients on tight deadlines.

We understand that collaboration delivers amazing results. Every single person in our teams has a unique perspective and expertise to offer and we pride ourselves on making sure everyone's voices are heard at AtkinsRéalis.

Architectural Technician

Key difference - Architectural technicians specialise in technical aspects of architecture, particularly in translating designs into construction documents.

Responsibilities - You'll be providing technical guidance and innovative solutions to help resolve complex technical and design challenges. As well as preparing, developing, and editing detailed drawings and models to develop all parts of the changing design process.

"I love the passion for design, the project and career opportunities, the support, and the understanding of well-being and a work-life balance. Compared to some of the previous firms I've worked for – AtkinsRéalis is incredible at supporting staff and goes above and beyond to nurture our careers." -Interior Designer

Key difference - Interior Designers create interior spaces and focus on the aesthetics and ergonomics of a project. You'll have experience and knowledge of compliance requirements, such as the Building Regulations and British Standards.

Responsibilities - Through collaboration with clients, contractors, and other Architects, Interior Designers create detailed drawings and renderings to communicate interior design proposals. By leveraging your knowledge of products, materials, zoning and building codes, and construction methods, you will consider lighting, acoustics, environmental factors and more.

Sustainable architecture is an essential part of overcoming some of the biggest global challenges. Here at AtkinsRéalis, we are dedicated to building a better future for our planet and its people and our Architects are directly contributing to achieving our mission.

Bring our projects to life as an Architect at AtkinsRéalis
