Job Title:  Secondary Engineering Manager

Location: Birmingham, United Kingdom  

Overview:

The Secondary Engineering Manager will be a member of the Linxon UK Engineering Team and will contribute towards the effective execution of the secondary engineering functions within projects and tenders. The Secondary engineering manager will be responsible for the secondary engineering on a wide range of National Grid, SSEN & SPEN substation projects. The position will focus on the project and tender engineering and its interfaces and scope of work involved in HV - substation design and construction projects, within the Linxon EPC design of substation to meet customer needs, legislative demands and standards. Also, to ensure project execution within budget and time. 

What will you do?

  • Secondary Engineering Manager will manage large and complex EHV/HV Air & Gas Insulated Substation (AIS & GIS) projects in UK.
  • Overall responsible for managing & leading secondary engineering activities from project start till the As-Built stage with strict adherence to Project Specifications & Linxon standards including QA/QC, HSSE & Integrity.
  • Instruct, supervise & coordinate within Linxon (Local - UK team & Remote - GETS team), internal & external partners, sub-suppliers, secondary engineers.
  • Provide information for secondary design and coordination of interfaces between different stakeholders, protection and control system suppliers, auxiliary power system and all other equipment suppliers related to secondary for the project.
  • Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers, handle site queries and take necessary actions up to as-built documentation
  • Engineering budget, schedule, forecast, risk & change management activities.
  • Technical claim management & supporting PM/Contracting/Operation management team.
  • Drive innovation and improvements in design processes, tools, and methodologies.

Technical solutions

  • Provide technical solution for substations comprising Functional design specification, Key Line Diagrams, preparing technical information, documents by established applicable standards, processes and customer specifications through allocated resources locally and in other business units.
  • Develop technical concepts, technical specifications, selection of equipment and connection material considering costs, quality, international standards, and material.
  • Provide technical calculations, technical purchasing specification and schedules for all equipment for projects or tenders.
  • Prepare cost estimation, deviations & clarifications for technical solutions.
  • Review of Suppliers design, Factory acceptance test plans, attend factory & site tests.
  • Provide technical support and to develop tender scheme options and related project scope documents.

Experience Required:

  • Bachelor or master’s in electrical engineering or equivalent
  • Good Experience in substation secondary engineering experience in utilities. Knowledge of required legislative demands and standards.

Competencies/ Skills Required:

  • Result orientated team player with a proactive approach.
  • Excellent in communication, to interact with external and internal parties at all levels in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Expert knowledge in protection and control systems, SCADA/SAS systems
  • Experience in design tools such as AutoCAD, EPLAN or similar software
  • Knowledge of system studies like load flow, short circuit calculation, CT/VT calculations, Auxiliary Power Systems, LV power and control cables.
  • Knowledge of Relays and settings based on client requirement.
  • Strong in MS Office, knowledge in AutoCAD is required.
  • Fluency in English – both written and spoken.

Education Required:

  • Master or Bachelor’s degree in an Electrical engineering discipline with ability to demonstrate experience delivering complex projects in the transmission market.
