Bridges and Civils
Civil engineering
Work with us, designing, constructing, implementing and maintaining the places and spaces around us, from buildings to bridges, roads and railways. You'll be part of a talented team supporting our clients in maintaining and upgrading the national transportation network across:
• Highways infrastructure: sign gantries, masts and road restraint systems
• Railway line infrastructure
• Buried: earthworks, retaining walls, and drainage and earth structures
• Overhead line electrification structures
• Level crossings
• Station and depots
Bridge engineering
Join the team, and you'll be surrounded by experts in all aspects of the end-to-end asset life cycle, from code compilation to dynamic, in-service monitoring. Bridges are often the focal point of design solutions. Together, the team has the depth and breadth of technical expertise to undertake the most complex challenges. You'll be trusted to take the lead, supporting clients in assessing and maintaining their asset portfolios and creating new assets to improve the transportation network.
Senior bridge engineer
My role generally involves managing the delivery of technical projects, such as bridge designs or assessments, whether leading small- to medium-sized teams or working within a large multi-disciplinary team on a mega project.
My favourite project to work on was the Dock Road Bridge Assessment, based in Tilbury in Essex. As part of the project, I travelled to the Global Technology Centre, India, for three months to lead the local assessment teams. Working with engineers from different countries and learning about their work culture was great. Back in the UK, I also went on site visits, participated in surveys and tested the strength of materials on the bridge.
My project work on numerous Swedish bridge projects and my current role on the M25 J10 design project have also been very fulfilling. My experience at tkinsRéalis has been varied and challenging. I've worked in the UK, India and Sweden, collaborating with teams in these countries.
I've worked with many highly skilled, knowledgeable people, seizing opportunities to work on exciting, challenging projects, which have accelerated my career development.
Assistant engineer
My role involves working with different teams around the UK on several exciting and high-profile major highways projects and local authority schemes. I work directly and indirectly with key clients to deliver various structural design packages and projects, maintaining, assessing and designing bridges.
I joined AtkinsRéalis two years ago on the Graduate Development Programme. As part of the programme, I have been fortunate to work on various challenging and exciting projects, which have helped me garner comprehensive knowledge and experience within this industry. Moreover, I was given the opportunity to go on a six-month secondment as an Assistant Project Manager to Connect Plus Services, responsible for the Operations and Maintenance of the M25 motorway network. During this time, I developed skills outside my regular job role, building personal relationships with various stakeholders around the client. This gave me an insight into what it is like to be in the client's shoes. This secondment has immeasurably helped me develop professionally and opened more doors of opportunities, which came with a greater level of responsibility that I am very appreciative of.
Practice manager
I've worked for AtkinsRéalis since before my graduation. I started by doing a summer placement in the Cambridge office while studying for my degree in Civil Engineering. I enjoyed my time in the office, gaining some great practical experience to complement my education and was fortunate to be offered a permanent role. Since then, I've had great opportunities to travel with AtkinsRéalis. I initially transferred to a project team in London, giving me the background and experience I needed to become a Chartered Civil Engineer. After that, I was seconded for three years to our Global Technology Centres in the UAE and then India, delivering UK projects from abroad. I transferred to our Birmingham office, where I have worked ever since.
One of AtkinsRéalis' strengths is that the organization supports people moving around the company to further their career development and personal aspirations. I've also been able to change to flexible working hours to suit my personal commitments.
